Description

Massive Earthmoving Machines: Part 2 Black Thunder and Garzweiler. Written by Keith Haddock, a retired engineer and distinguished author of several books on earthmoving equipment. Playing time approximately 70 minutes.

Part 2 - Visit the largest coal mine in North America, Black Thunder Mine in Wyoming that produced over 86 million tons of coal in 2007. One of five walking draglines at work there is “Ursa Major”, a Bucyrus-Erie 2570-WS, the largest working in North America. Keith Haddock guides us knowledgeably through the engineering and operation of this giant and shows how it fits into the mine’s work-flow. Black Thunder has many other outstanding machines including the Bucyrus 495 HR electric shovel and the Cat 657E scraper, both the world’s largest of their types available today. Observe spectacular action shots of the 495HR loading 250-ton Caterpillar 793D haulers in just two passes, and watch a D11R dozer make a “waterfall” of earth cascade down to shovel’s dipper as it collects each load.

Over in Germany visit the bucket wheel excavators of RWE Power AG. at the Garzweiler lignite (brown coal) mine. Mounted on 12 crawler assemblies, bucketwheel 288 is truly is a monster – the world’s largest terrestial moving machine that can extract and convey 12,500 cubic metres of lignite or overburden an hour. Take a grandstand view as the bucket wheel turns into the digging face with insatiable appetite. Explore the complex system of conveyors as the material is followed to its destination, overburden to a giant crawler-mounted spreader, or coal to a rail-mounted stockpile rehandler.

Without going to the actual mine, you won’t find a better insight into modern surface coal mining or see more spectacular video of giant earthmoving equipment than in this video and its companion.
