Description

Massive Earthmoving Machines: Part 1 Belle Ayr and Beener Coal. Written by Keith Haddock, a retired mining engineer and distinguished author of several books on earthmoving equipment. Run time approximately 70 minutes.

Part 1 - Visit Belle Ayr Mine, Wyoming, where you’ll see three types of massive shovels in action, including two of the largest available anywhere: The Marion 301-M, P&H 4100XPB and Bucyrus 495HR. Watch these monster machines load a variety of haulers including the 360-ton Terex MT5500 and the world’s largest Caterpillar 797B in the 400 ton class. See coal loading by a P&H 2800 electric shovel and a Caterpillar 5130 backhoe. Follow haul trucks to the overburden dump were a Caterpillar 854G dozer keeps things tidy, and ride with the driver taking coal to the preparation plant. See the entire sequence of train loading with 10,000 tons of quality low-sulphur coal headed for eastern USA. Go to the top of a high coal silo and other places normally out-of-bounds. Watch action shots of other equipment such as the Caterpillar 24H, largest motor grader available today, and Caterpillar D10R and D11R dozers.

Over in Maryland visit Beener Coal Co. and the world’s biggest diesel rope-operated shovel, the Bucyrus-Erie 295B series II. It’s loading a fleet of Euclid trucks. Close by is another monster, the Komatsu D575A, the world’s largest bulldozer. Observe its massive push huge quantities of rock to uncover coal seams.

The programme focuses on extreme machines but also shows how these mines operate, from extraction and haulage to processing, transport and reclamation.

Without going to the actual mine, you won’t find a better insight into modern surface coal mining or see more spectacular video of giant earthmoving equipment than in this video and its companion.
